TCP Cup 2009 Barwon Heads PDF Print E-mail
February 2009

The 10th anniversary TCP Cup was held in the Victorian western district town of Barwon Heads in March 2009. The first round was played at the Barwon Heads Golf Club and the second and third rounds were played at the two courses at 13th Beach. As a number of the Division 2 stalwarts were not available a one division competotion with 24 players was played.

A change to the handicapping rules by the R & A which allows men to be handicapped up to 36 enabled the Divion 2 players to be seamlessly incorporated into the main draw without condemning them to the NAGA. The Division 2 players were handicapped using their previous TCP Cup results.

Weather conditions on Day 1 at Barwon Heads Golf Club were warm with the light northerly which assisted scoring. During the weekend there was a southerly change which made condition tough especially on the last day which was played on the Beach course.

Gareth sinks the winning putt

 The champ has breakfast

After a titatic battle with Springer on the last day in extremely tough conditions Gareth reigned supreme in the rain and wind to become TCP Cup champion for the first time. In third spot was the big hitting Frenchman Zidane who finished solidly with a nett 78 which was a great score in very tough conditions. Only 5 punters broke 100 on the last day on the fabulous Beach course which bared it's teeth. In fourth place was Skippy who played solid golf and would have won if he was given a non-elitest course handicap.
Interestingly the champion Gareth and runner up Springer had to drive back to Melbourne on the Saturday to attend a function and did not get in until late. They were fortunate to be rooming with The Cougar who cleaned their clubs while they were away and have them both a massage with happy ending which primed them for big rounds on the Sunday.

Some meaningless statistics

  • Gareth averaged 96 per round as compared to his overall TCP Cup average of 103 per round.
  • Springer averaged 103 per round, 3 less than his overall TCP Cup average which included some Division 2 rounds off forward markers.
  • Gareth now has 6 top 10 finishes from 8 TCP Cup appearances so is solid performer and maybe well handicapped.

Day 1 was played at the Barwon Heads Golf course which is a fabulous links layout but played easy as the drought has impacted the rough and the weather was warm with little wind. Slick came out of the blocks running with nett 69 to lead the field from Skippy who had a nett 70. Equal third with 71 were Gareth the Kinez and Jungle Jim. On a packed leader board there were only 6 strokes between the 16th player Full of Lager (who had not hit the turps yet) and the leader.

Shirley shot the low round off the day 78 off the stick for nett 73 which left him 4 off the pace. The Gaffer shot a lazy 128 which had him 4 clear in the NAGA position.

Slick shoots (that number) 69 on Day 1 to take the lead.

Skippy shoots 70 for 2nd place.

Day 2 was played on the Creek course at 13th Beach which is a fairly flat layout.. Weather conditions were good and the course played easy as the rough was dry and punters were not penalised for wayward shots. A number of great scores were recorded but none better than Gareth who shot 90 off the stick for nett 66 which shot him to the top off the leaderboard 5 clear of his nearest rival. A splendid round of 96 (nett 67) from Jerry Springer secured equal second position with Skippy McLean who shot a flawless 92 off the stick (nett 72) to back up the 90 he shot in Round 1. Making up the last group was Slick who shot a 90 (nett 75) leaving him 7 shots behind the tearway leader.

The low round of the day was shot by The Bandit who had 81 for nett 74. This left him 10 off the pace. The Crocodile wrapped up the NAGA after racking up 148 hits averaging more than 8 hits a hole.

The Bandit shoots nett 74 to be thereabouts.

On the Saturday night the wind turned to the south and the rain arrived making conditions on the Sunday very difficult. In addition, the final round was played on the Beach course which is a serious golfing challenge in good conditions. Consequently only 5 blokes did not raise the bat in the final round; all big strong good looking blokes. Low round was Shiley with 81 which was a fabulous score in trying condition. The Bandit had 88, Slick 93, Zidane 94 and The Rock 96.

Gareth playeed steady golf all day to maintain his lead and take out the 10th anniversary TCP Cup by 5 shots with a nett score of 217. Springer played well but could not bridge the gap and finished a clear second with a score of 223. In third place was Zidane who had a great last round and finished with an aggregate of 226, just pipping Skippy who finshed with 227. Making up the top ten were The Bandit 228, Jungle Jim 229, Shirley and Smoking Joe on 232, and Slick and The Cougar on 235.

The Crocodile after threatening over the years finally was rewarded with the NAGA with an aggregate of 290. The once 6 handicapper Max hacked his wasy into second last position with a aggregate of 271. Eleven strokes further back is TCP Cup's leftie The Buddha.

Smoking Joe racks up another top 10 finish.

Shirley shoots 80 on last day in very difficult conditions.

Due the withdrawal of Division 2 stalwarts Jars and The Bear only one division was played at Barwon Heads.

The Asian champion stuggled in the cold conditions on Day 3.

The Snake behaved himself as he is now a married man.

Off the park it was a quiet weekend with dinner in town on the Friday night and The Cougar arranging pizza in his room on the Saturday night.

Ten year medals were presented to the punters who had competed in all TCP Cups.

Newman finished midfieldSir Les played ok on first 2 days but sprayed them badly in the wind on Day 3.

The Bandit does some Extreme Hunting.

Foll'o'lager should have stayed in bed on the last day. Needed at calculator to add them up.

Once again we had a great weekend and congratulations to Gareth on his splending victory. He becomes the first kinez to win the TCP Cup. Next year we are off to Murray Downs for TCP Cup Eleven. Good golfing and thank your mother for the rabbits.
